History
In 1984, John "Doc" Bryan, a Tulsa
eye surgeon, decided that too many Tulsa area basketball players were being overlooked
because they were not getting the opportunity to play in front of college coaches who
regularly scout and recruit during the summer months. With no money, borrowed uniforms and
only the incentive to play in post-season summer tournaments, Dr. Bryan formed the Tulsa
Hawks, providing the chance for Tulsa area players to test their skills against
players such as Ron Artest, Elton Brand, Shaquille ONeal, Paul Pierce,
Steven Jackson and Kobe
Bryant.
Over the course of 17 years, the Tulsa
Hawks established a rich tradition as one of the nations elite summer
basketball programs, consistently fielding talent-laden teams. The Hawks
have been coached by Alan Axley, Mike Bolton and Jim Cox, with countless victories over
premier teams from California to New York City. Major titles include three (3) BCI
National Championships, as well as consecutive wins in the 1995
Converse National Roundball Invitational over perennial national powerhouse
teams: CMH 76ers, Arkansas Wings, Atlanta Celtics and New
York Riverside Church.
Most importantly, with Dr. Bryans
commitment and vision, the Tulsa Hawks have given over 200 young men the
opportunity to be seen by hundreds of college recruiters, resulting in countless college
scholarships. In addition, these players have had the chance to experience travel,
participate in tournaments across the country and represent the city of Tulsa in a
first-class manner. As can be seen from the following rosters, the Hawks have
been blessed with many great players who have gone on to successful endeavors on and off
the court. We sincerely hope we played a role in helping them along the way.
